SRP to patrol Narmada canal to prevent pilferage of water

Ahmedabad, Feb 4 (UNI) Following reports of large-scale pilferage of water by scarcity-affected farmers of Saurashtra and Kutch regions of Gujarat, the state government has decided to deploy State Reserve Police (SRP) to patrol along the main Narmada canal till the onset of monsoon.
According to state home department sources, police and SRP personnel have begun patrolling the Narmada canal passing through Surendranagar district to check farmers from pilfering water for irrigating their land. The district is situated between Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Kutch districts and is a drought-prone area bordering the arid Little Rann of Kutch.
A contingent of armed policemen comprising an inspector and 24 jawans of SRP has been deployed to patrol along the canal in Halvad taluka of the district to cover Tikar, Mangadh, Chandragadh, Ranmalpur, Ishanpur, Sapakada and Kavadiya villages notorious for pilferage of water.
