Rameswaram, Dec 15 (UNI) Sri Lanka Navy allegedly attacked a number of Indian fishing trawlers and chased away hundreds of fishers at gun point when they were engaged in fishing activities near the controversial Katchatheevu islet, early on Sunday.
The fishermen, who returned to Rameswaram fishing jetty after the brutal mid-sea attack, told newsmen that the Sri Lankan Naval patrol vessels encircled the fishing trawlers, destroyed the fishing nets cast on the high seas, damaged the fishing gadgets and GPS equipments' valued several lakhs of rupees.
They also warned us of dire consequences and forced to retreat from the zone at gun point. Each fishing boat incurred a loss between Rs 50,000 to Rs 80,000 in the attack, the fishermen said.
