Spectrum auction to be held in this financial year: Ravi Shankar

New Delhi, Oct 14 (UNI) Assuring improvement in spectrum price, Communications, Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Monday said the spectrum auction will be held in the current financial year itself.

Inaugurating the three-day India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2019 based on technology, Mr Prasad said the policies necessary for the telecom sector, have been improved. With regards to spectrum price, he said it would also be improved.

Earlier, Bharti Airtel's Sunil Bharti Mittal, while addressing the IMC, said the price of spectrum in the country is up to seven times higher than the major countries of the world.

Reliance Jio Board Director Mahendra Nahata said there is need to pay attention to the prices of 5G spectrum. The government should prepare a clear roadmap for timely availability of 5G spectrum.

He said the telecom sector needs to be considered in a holistic manner. The 4G network has invested 50 billion dollars and Reliance Jio is the largest network. There is a need to formulate a policy for spectrum, equipment manufacturing, developers and service, to start a 5G network in the country, he added.

The country's major telecom companies have advised the government not to auction 5G spectrum at the moment. The companies said that before the 5G spectrum auction, the emphasis should be laid on building infrastructure in the country.
