Species traits and geography determine genetic diversity in ancient arthropod group: Global Study

Hyderabad, June 7 (UNI) A global study conducted by Dr Jahnavi Joshi's team at the CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) reveals that species traits, such as body size, and geographical factors account for over 25 percent of the variation in genetic diversity within centipedes—a soil invertebrate group with a 420-million-year evolutionary history.
Genetic diversity refers to the dissimilarities in DNA sequences (mutations) among individuals of a species. These differences influence their responses to environmental changes and are known to affect species diversity.
Research on the drivers of genetic diversity has primarily focused on a few extensively studied animal groups with readily available genetic sequence information. However, these selected groups do not represent the vast diversity of animal species, leaving scientists with insufficient knowledge to evaluate general patterns governing genetic diversity across various life forms.
