SP-Congress alliance in UP collapses before taking off

SP-Congress alliance in UP collapses before taking off

Lucknow, Jan 21(UNI) The Samajwadi Party-Congress pre-poll alliance which was promising to alter the political equations for assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh by consolidating the Muslim vote bank, has collapsed before it could even take off. However, both the Congress and the SP have kept the prospects of forging alliance for the remaining five phases of the assembly polls alive. Both the parties will contest all the 140 Assembly seats going to the polls in first and second phase of the assembly elections on February 11 and February 15. Now, the Congress has decided to announce candidates in 140 seats of the first two phases, going to polls alone in west UP. The SP was willing to offer only 99 seats to the Congress while the grand old party wanted 130 seats. SP sources said Akhilesh Yadav has conveyed in categorical terms that SP is not willing to concede more than 99 seats. The alliance was called off following both the parties saying that other's demands for more seats was unreasonable. Sources said the core issue is - how many seats will each party get and which seat will go to which party. SP sources said the party is not waiting for the alliance to be through and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav will release his party's manifesto here tomorrow . Sources said refusal of the SP to concede the assembly seats falling within the Amethi and Raibareli Lok Sabha seats to the Congress have derailed the talks. The Congress keeping view the 2019 Lok Sabha polls wants to contest all the 10 Assembly segments falling under Amethi and Rai Bareli while the SP is willing to concede only one assembly seat in Rai Bareli which was won by the Congress in 2012 Assembly elections. The Congress, which has been reduced to a fringe player in UP politics, is desperate for alliance with the SP to recover some ground. The SP maintains that the Congress does not have the organisational strength and the footprint in the state to demand 130 seats while the Congress is insisting on the high number of seats as low number of seats will hurt its national party image and status. SP sources said the alliance is stuck as Congress wants those seats which it had lost in 2012 assembly elections. UNI MB SDR RSA 2042
