South Korea shuts schools again amid surge in nCoV cases

South Korea shuts schools again amid surge in nCoV cases

Seoul, May 29(UNI) South Korean authorities on Friday closed down more than 200 schools in the country, just days after they re-opened, following a spike in coronavirus cases.

On Wednesday, thousands of students had returned to schools post easing of lockdown restrictions, but just a day later, 79 new cases were recorded, the highest daily figure in two months since April 5, when 81 infections surfaced, BBC reported.

Most of these cases have been linked to a logistics centre outside Seoul.

The warehouse, in the city of Bucheon, is run by e-commerce outfit Coupang. In March, the firm started providing essentials to people isolating at home.

However, Health officials have said the facility was not strictly complying with infection control measures. They even discovered traces of COVID-19 on workers' shoes and clothes.

Fifty-eight new cases were recorded on Friday, taking the tally in the country to 11,402.

The contagion has claimed 269 lives in the nation so far and 770 patients are under isolation.
