New Delhi, Apr 25 (UNI) Somnath Temple in Gujarat, Gangotri, Yamunotri and Char Minar in Hyderabad are among the 10 new Iconic places to be taken under the Phase-II of Swachh Iconic Places initiative. Besides the above places, the other six places which are to be brought to a higher standard of swachhata and visitors’ amenities are Mahakaleshwar Temple, Ujjain, Church and Convent of St Francis of Assissi Goa, Adi Shankaracharya’s abode Kaladi in Ernakulam, Gomateshwar in Shravanbelgola, Baijnath Dham, Devghar, and Gaya Tirth in Bihar. The names of new cities were announced at the second quarterly review meeting on the Swachh Iconic Places (SIP) held at Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine at Katra in Jammu. Governor of Jammu & Kashmir NN Vohra; Union Minister for Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water and Sanitation, Narendra Singh Tomar; Union Minister of State, Dr Jitendra Singh; Minister of State, J&K, Ajay Nanda; Secretary, Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, and other senior officers attended the meeting. The ten Iconic places already in Phase I are: Ajmer Sharif Dargah, CST Mumbai, Golden Temple, Amritsar, Kamakhya Temple, Assam, Maikarnika Ghat, Varanasi, Meenakshi Temple, Madurai, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, Katra, J&K, Shree Jagannath Temple, Puri, The Taj Mahal, Agra, Tirupati Temple, Tirumala. Mr Tomar highlighted the progress made under Swachh Bharat Mission. He told the meeting that the country had made fast and remarkable progress with sanitation coverage increasing to 64% with 1.92 lakh villages becoming ODF. UNI NAZ SNU 1714
