Snow avalanche at Zojila pass, narrow escape for Beacon officials

Srinagar, Apr 5 (UNI) Beacon project officials had a narrow escape, when a snow avalanche hit Zojila on Friday during snow clearance operation on Srinagar-Leh national highway, which remained closed for traffic since December 2018.

Official sources said that a group of Beacon project officials were busy in snow clearance operation when a snow avalanche occurred at Zojila pass. “It was a close call as the officials were just a few meters away.”

The area is avalanche prone and every precaution was being taken during snow clearance operation, they added.

The snow clearance operation from both the sides of Zojila was started last month.

There is about 10 to 15 feet of snow accumulated on the highway, officials said.

The highway is likely to reopen later this month provided there is no fresh snowfall and avalanche as is the only road linking Ladakh region with Kashmir.

However, the Centre has already sanctioned construction of a tunnel at Zojila to make it an all weather road.
