Smuggled gold brought to UAE consulate 12 times, reveals accused

Kochi, Jul 16 (UNI) The accused in the gold smuggling case has revealed that
they smuggled gold to UAE consulate through Thiruvananthapuram airport 12
times before when Swapna and Sarith were working there and afterwards
The accused claimed that they made the fake emblem of UAE and fake stickers
of diplomatic baggage. The duo used to deliver the gold from airport to the
workshop of Sandeep Nair, sources said on Thursday.
The diplomatic baggage will be allowed to be taken only in a vehicle carrying
the emblem of the consulate. The accused brought this vehicle to the consulate
premises and handed over the bag to dealers 12 times.
They also exchanged it at a gymnasium in Karamana, Thiruvananthapuram.
Former principal secretary of chief minister M Sivasankar had promised to
give the contract of maintenance of KSRTC bus engines to the workshop,
owned by Sandeep Nair.
Sivasankar told customs that it was Swapna who introduced him to Sandeep.
Following this, he offered to give the contract of KSRTC buses.
After the gold smuggling case came to light, controversies erupted about the
workshop and the political leaders who visited there. The workshop was not
functioning always. There are ambiguities regarding the offer to give the
contract for repairing KSRTC buses to a workshop like this, local people said.
