Smart metering gaining traction in COVID times

Kolkata, Sep 13 (UNI) Smart metering adoption by CESC has helped the company
generate significant savings on account of transformers, stated by Sankar
Mukhopadhyay, Head AIPM, CESC Ltd at the ‘Innovation & Efficiency in Energy
during COVID Times’ e-conference organized by the Indian Chamber of Commerce
(ICC).
“In 2014, we could reduce the purchase in number of transformers by 465, in 2015
by 307 while in 2017-18, no new transformers were purchased, thanks to adoption
of smart metering”, said Mukhopadhyay.
Experts agreed that unless there is a strict metering system through the use of AI,
IOT etc. managing the local operating grid system will be difficult.
The entire country has not faced any major disaster in the power sector from the
operational point of view during COVID, thanks to the quick technology adoption and
shift to digital mode of working, said Gautam Ray, ED- HR & Admin CESC Ltd.
While a lot of innovation is being brought on the plate by the power sector to ensure
uninterrupted power supply during and after the lockdown, the sector is expecting
further opportunities with EVs becoming a large-scale reality in India in future.
Prem R Kumar, CEO, BSES Yamuna Power Ltd, was of the opinion that there is a
need for increased technology adoption to reduce human errors and the gap between
the demand and supply of power.
“In being able to control and track distribution of energy in future when there will be
increased renewables along with the traditional sources, IOT utilization will be of
paramount importance,” said Anil Razdan (Retd. IAS), former Power Secretary, GOI
& Chairman, ICC National Expert Committee on Energy.
He further said when India moves to becoming a 15% gas consuming nation, city
gas distribution networks need to bring about innovative solutions so as to minimize
movement of cylinders for cleaner energy.
In terms of innovation, Suresh P Manglani, CEO, Adani Gas, informed that Adani
Gas is in the process of research to develop an IOT based dispenser, compressor
and other devices so that machines can start communicating with respect to when it
requires maintenance and which part of it requires repair.
