Slam for slums: Congress criticises Govt for constructing wall to hide jhuggis in Ahmedabad

New Delhi, Feb 18 (UNI) Taking on the BJP-led Union government for its policies on various issues, the Congress on Tuesday criticised Gujarat government's decision to construct a wall to keep a slum out of sight during US President Donald Trump's visit to Gujarat on February 24, and said, 'this is BJP's new India'.
"We live in times where : GDP is measured in tons, citizen rights in volts, nationalism in decibels,
poverty in height and length of the wall, this is BJP’s ‘New India’!", tweeted AICC communication in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala, while sharing news report regarding the construction of wall.
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation reportedly decided to reduce the height of the wall to four feet, instead of seven feet high as decided earlier.
The slum, Saraniyavas or Dev Saran slum in Ahmedabad, is situated en route, which will be taken by the US president and first lady Melania Trump during their visit.
It seems that Mr Surjewala's mention of 'GDP is measured in tons' and 'citizen rights in volts' is the response to the statements made by Home Minister Amit Shah over economy and Shaheen Bagh protests.
Mr Surjewala also criticised the BJP government in Gujarat for its decision to cut seats in government polytechnics and engineering colleges.
"‘Shut down education’ is BJP’s ‘Gujarat Model’ now! As Gujarat government cuts 7,400 seats in 23 government Polytechnics and 2,500 seats of 11 engineering colleges, one thing is clear - Rupani government has 100 crore for ‘event management’ but zero money for eventful education!", the Congress communication chief tweeted.
