SJM seeks PM’s intervention to halt WCD Ministry's reported move for mandatory fortification of staple foods

New Delhi, Aug 30 (UNI) RSS affiliate Swadesh Jagran Manch (SJM) on Thursday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi raising strong objections to the reported move of the Ministry of Women and Child Development to promote mandatory ``fortification of staple foods,’’ rather than address ``dietary deficiency’’ of the poor.
``Currently fortification is being seen as a replacement to dietary deficiency whereas SJM firmly believes that fortification should not be taken as an excuse for inadequate dietary intake. Europe has solved its nutrition problems by improved dietary intake, why can’t India?''
``We urge your good office to pass instructions that no decision should be taken until serious concerns and issues have been satisfactorily addressed,’’ said the letter to the Prime Minister here written by SJM Co-Convenor Ashwini Mahajan.
