Sixth Coast Guard OPV 'Yard 45006' launched

Chennai, Feb 27 (UNI) The sixth Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV)

(Yard-45006) was launched by Ms Geeta Mandaviya, wife of Union Minister

of State for shipping, Chemicals and Fertilizers Mansukh Mandaviya at the

L and T Shipbuilding, Kattupalli, near here, today.

The OPV was the sixth in the series of seven project being built by the L and T

Shipbuilding under the contract signed between Defence Ministry and M/s L and

T Limited in 2015, and it would be inducted into the Indian Coast Guard after

completion of extensive trials and testing of onboard equipment and machinery.

In keeping with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiative of Make in India, the

contract for building OPV class of vessel was awarded to L and T.

A defence release said the length of the OPV was 98 m and breadth 15 M with a

gross tonnage of 2100 tons.

The endurance of the vessel, to be manned by 121 personnel, was 5,000 nautical


The maximum speed is 26 knots being propelled by two diesel driven engines of

9,000 kw each with low level fuel consumption, high TBO and complying to IMO

Tier-II norms.

The ship will be fitted with on CRN-91 and two 12.7 mm guns and will be capable

of carrying an Integral Twin Engine Helicopter which will enhance its operational,

surveillance and search and rescue capability.

The Ship would be utilized for day and night patrol/surveillance along with anti-terrorist

and anti-smuggling operations in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) as well as Coastal


The OPV will have two Navigation Radars with ultra-modern technology, sophisticated

navigational and latest communication systems.

Speaking on the occasion Mr Manush said the Coast Guard was on the path of rapid

expansion which requires large number of state-of-the-art ships and aircraft to strengthen

the maritime security mechanism in the prevailing security scenario.

He also said the assets requirements were being met by adding new ships and replacement

of ageing existing OPV class of ships in a phased manner which have been inducted 30 to

35 years ago.
