Situation normal in Assam & other northeastern states: Rajnath

New Delhi, Jan 9 (UNI) After members of Rajya Sabha demanded for the Home Minister’s statement over ongoing incidents of violence in Northeastern part of the country following apprehenstions over the Citizenship Amendment Bill, Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday said that the situation in Assam and other Northeastern states are normal and the government is keeping tight vigil on the developments.
“I have received some reports of incidents of violence in Tripura, Assam and other parts of Northeastern states. Today, things are normal. We are keeping tight vigil in those states. We are on alert. We will do everything with the help of states,” said Mr Singh.
Mr Rajnath Singh said he was aware of the concerns and complexities in the Bill. Singh said he will speak to chief ministers of North-East states over their concerns.
He also added that the government has done a lot in last 4.5 years and the reason why there are tremendous improvement in security of northeastern states.
On the Bill, he said, “We have brought this bill so that the migrants from three countries can stay here. They have been persecuted on religious ground in their countries. I would like to clarify here that its not an issue of migrants staying in Assam only or coming from only one country. Its not only the responsibility of Assam only. Its an responsibility of entire country.”
On illegal migrants the minister said his government has taken strong measures to stop them.
Answering Congress member Anand Sharma's demand earlier in the day on the law and order situation being disturbed in the North-East, Singh said the situation in northeastern India was normal and under control.
The Minister said that special status is given to 6 communities.
‘’The culture of the North-East will be protected, said Singh.
He added that it is a move to preserve peace in Assam.
After the statement by the minister, many members wanted to seek clarifications on the statemtn. However, Miniswer of state for parliamentary affaitrs Vijay Goel said that clarifications could be sought on a suoi moto statement but since the minister’s statement was an observarion, clarifications could not be sought.
Congress MP Ripun Bora from Assam, seeking clarification on the minister's statement, said,'Assam is burning now. I need clarification.'
Deputy Chairman Harivansh declined his demand and said after observation, no one can put question.
During the Zero Hour, the lawmakers from the opposition , who were protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019, had sought the Mr Singh’s statement.
The Bill has been brought to give citizenship status to migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan after they were oppressed in their respective countries on religious ground.
