Singareni plans pilot underground coal gasification project in Telangana

Hyderabad, July 11 (UNI) The Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) is stepping up efforts to enter the coal gasification sector, with preparations underway to launch a pilot underground coal gasification (UCG) project as part of its strategy to transform into a diversified energy company.
SCCL Chairman and Managing Director Dr. Buddhaprakash Jyoti reviewed the company's coal gasification initiatives during a meeting with Dr. Srikant Nagulapalli, Director General of the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH) under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, at Singareni Bhavan here on Friday evening.
The CMD said SCCL is exploring multiple options to improve the viability of its proposed 400-tonnes-per-day Ammonium Nitrate Melt Plant at the Singareni Thermal Power Plant (STPP), following a feasibility study conducted by Engineers India Limited (EIL).
He said the company is evaluating measures such as increasing the plant's capacity, availing the Central Government's Viability Gap Funding (VGF) support and adopting indigenous technologies to make the project economically viable.
As part of its expansion plans, an SCCL team will visit major coal gasification projects, including Talcher, MCL-BHEL and JSPL, later this month to study their operations and best practices.
The company is also carrying out techno-economic studies for surface coal gasification projects in the Bheemaram, Chennur South and Naini coal blocks.
On underground coal gasification, Dr. Jyoti said SCCL has identified five deep coal blocks in the Bellampalli and Ramagundam regions as potential project sites.
Preparations are in progress to launch the first pilot project at the Bellampalli Dip-side Block, including drilling operations. The pilot project will be implemented with technical support from scientists of the Central Mine Planning & Design Institute (CMPDI) and CSIR-Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CSIR-CIMFR).
Senior SCCL directors and officials, including Directors L.V. Suryanarayana (Operations), K.
