Bengaluru’s High Ultra Lounge D J Silvr has a heart-to-heart chat with ‘Developing India Mirror’ Correspondent Anu Ranjita
Q. When did you begin D.J.-ing and what or who were your early passions and influences?
A. The obsession to play music has always been a mighty passion of mine and this thrill started off at a very young age. Having a strong base of instruments like the acoustic guitar, composing music and understanding it became hugely easy for me. I’ve always been mesmerised with the abilities of a synthesiser -- how it mimics different sounds and compiles them -- hence my drive towards electronic music grew further. Such music is an integral part of my life. Daft Punk and the Chemical Brothers greatly impacted on and influenced my sense of music while I was growing up. Music keeps on changing with the times and I’ve learnt to adapt in order to keep listeners happy.
Q. A word on the differences you observe in contemporary Bollywood songs when compared with the past?
A. The songs released earlier lacked good marketing hence popularity took a longer period of time to develop whereas commercial ones today are heard by almost everyone because of strong social media platforms. Also, songs are unique and cool among the masses in their own time.
Q. What do you usually kick off with when preparing for a set?
A. Sub-genres such as Chill and Deep House work very well in my opening sets. Most of the time, I like going with the flow by reading the crowd for deciding what to play next. I prefer following it up with good progressive mixes plus pop tunes and finally some soul-shaking big-room stuff!
Q. How do you motivate a shy crowd to dance?
A. I cheer and call out to them on the microphone to loosen up and get to the dance floor. Sometimes I also ask the crowd, when they are too shy, to start things off with some ‘liquid courage’.
Q. How has your experience been at High Ultra Lounge?
A. It’s the most vibrant place I’ve played at till date. From the ambience to breathtaking views of the city, the locale is nothing short of the country’s best lounge bar and it’s an absolute pleasure to be a part of it. The crowd is so receptive and loves the atmosphere that goes along with the music. That makes it a pleasurable and ecstatic evening for them and me as well.
