SI says Balfour Declaration not fully upheld even after 100 years

London, Nov 2 (UNI) On the first centenary of the Balfour Declaration on Palestine, the Socialist International on Thursday reminded the world that the commitment made one hundred years ago in the Balfour Declaration that "nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine", has not been fully upheld, and many of these rights have been successively eroded.
In a statement here, the Socialist International -- a worldwide association of political parties, most of which seek to establish democratic socialism (democratic socialist, social-democratic and labour political parties and other organisations) -- said that one hundred years ago on 2nd of November, during the First World War, British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour had conveyed the support of his country's government for the establishment of a "national home for the Jewish people in Palestine", in a declaration that has had a profound impact on the subsequent history of the Middle East and on the peoples of Israel and Palestine.
However, "the commitment made one hundred years ago in the Balfour Declaration that nothing would be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, has not been fully upheld, and many of these rights have been successively eroded," It said.
