Shimla ZP cautions HRTC against plying worn-out buses in rural areas, flags road safety risks

Shimla, Jan 18 (UNI) The last general house meeting of the Shimla Zila Parishad held here ahead of the upcoming Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) elections, witnessed strong concern over the continued deployment of old and worn-out buses by the HRTC in rural parts of the district.
Zila Parishad members warned that operating ageing vehicles on difficult hill roads, particularly on airport link roads and other accident-prone stretches, poses a serious safety hazard and could lead to major disasters in the event of mechanical failure or loss of control. Members pointed out that frequent breakdowns of such buses are already causing hardship to commuters in rural areas, disrupting schedules and leaving passengers stranded.
The issue of acute shortage of buses in HRTC Shimla Unit-III was also raised, with members stating that the deficit often results in delays in departures and irregular services. The Zila Parishad chairman directed the concerned authorities to ensure that worn-out buses are not sent to rural routes and that only roadworthy vehicles are deployed. It was decided that a formal proposal in this regard would be forwarded to the state government for necessary action.
