Set up national farmers commission, storage facilities: Bill in Rajya Sabha

New Delhi, July 19 (UNI) A Private Member's Bill to set up a national commission to resolve problems faced by farmers was moved in the Rajya Sabha on Friday.
The Bill, moved for consideration of the Elders by Vijay Pal Singh Tomar of the Bharatiya Janata Party, also aims to educate farmers about latest technologies and techniques to make the agricultural process simple and fast.
Piloting the Bill, Mr Tomar lamented the inadequate storage facilities for agricultural produce which went waste.
''Lack of storage facilities leads to destruction of the amount of output that Britain produced in a whole year,'' Mr Tomar said.
He called for a reduction to 5 per cent of Goods and Services Tax on agricultural produce and stressed the need to build propers infrastructure facilities in the hinterland.
Mr Tomar demanded that the amount of the 'Kisan Samman Nidhi' be increased from Rs 6,000 to Rs 10,000.
Ms Chaya Verma of the Indian National Congress said support to farmers should be increased for the progress of the nation.
Harnath Singh Yadav of the BJP sought to blame the previous Congress governments for the farmer of the country being steeped in debt.
''If the farmers today are steeped in debt, Congress is to blame. For 60 years they cheated farmers. No steps were taken to give them the right price for their produce,'' he added.
