Sensex ends negative at 34,771.05 on profit-booking

Mumbai, Jan 16 (UNI) The benchmark index of Bombay Stock Exchange
(BSE) on Tuesday fell by 72.46 points to end negative at 34,771.05,
snapping the winning streak of last three sessions, on profit-
booking as local investors shied away on account of trade deficit in
December.
The Nifty of National Stock Exchange (NSE) too declined by 41.10
points to 10,700.45.
The trade deficit in December touched its highest in over three
years, as higher import bills for gold and crude oil weighed.
The trade deficit for December 2017 was estimated at USD 14.88
billion, as against the deficit of USD 10.54 billion during December
2016.
Among macroeconomic data, exports rose 12.36 per cent to USD 27.03
billion in December 2017 over December 2016, while imports rose
21.12 pc to USD 41.91 billion in December 2017 over December 2016.
The market remained volatile throughout the day as the Sensex rose
by 37 points to 34,877.77 in the morning trade. It gained further by
93 points to a day's high of 34,936.03. It erased early gains in
late trade and closed weaker at 34,771.05, sliding by 72.46 points
as compared to its previous close.
The Nifty registered day's high and low at 10,762.35 and 10,687.85
points, respectively.
The sectoral indices that edged lower were Metal, Realty, FMCG
Telecom, FMCG and Utilities, however, Technology and IT were
positive that capped its further losses, brokers said.
Scrips of Coal India, Reliance Industries, Tata Motors and Tata
Steel eased during the day.
Among the secondary indices, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index lost by 1.74
pc. The Small-Cap index dropped 2.21 pc. Both these indices
underperformed the Sensex.
The total turnover on BSE amounted to Rs 7,648.82 crore, compared
with a turnover of Rs 5,271.95 crore registered during the previous
trading session.
The broad market depicted weakness with more than three losers for
every gainer on BSE, as 2,222 shares declined against 754 advanced
and 115 were unchanged.
