Sensex ends negative at 28,523.20 on weaker global cues

Mumbai, Sep 20 (UNI) Snapping the winning streak of last four sessions, the BSE Sensex fell today by 111.30 points to end negative at 28,523.20 on weaker global cues coupled with profit booking by local operators at higher levels.
The Nifty of National Stock Exchange (NSE) also declined by 32.50 points to 8,775.90.
The Sensex went up by 56 points to 28,690 in early trade. It immediately slipped in red by 154 points to hit the day's low of 28,480.53, before closing negative at 28,523.20, down by 111.30 points as compared to its last close.
Meanwhil, it touched day's high at 28,698.81, rising by 64 points during the day.
The Nifty recorded day's high and low at 8,816.45 and 8,759.30 points respectively.
Stocks of auto, telecom and index heavyweight Infosys led modest losses for key benchmark indices, while Metal and Oil & Gas rose that capped its further decline, brokers said.
Scrips of Hero MotoCorp, Adani Ports, Bajaj Auto, Bharti Airtel and NTPC dragged the market down.
In overseas stock markets, European stocks were mixed.
Asian stocks edged lower as investors awaited the outcome of separate policy meetings of the US Federal Reserve and Bank of Japan (BOJ). The BOJ begins a two-day monetary policy meeting today. The central bank will conduct a comprehensive review of its stimulus programme after failing to reach its two per cent inflation target.
The market breadth was negative as 1,533 shares declined and 1,184 rose while 202 were unchanged on BSE.
The BSE Mid-Cap index lost 0.19 pc. The BSE Small-Cap index declined 0.33 pc. The losses in both these indices were lower than the Sensex's decline in percentage terms.
The total turnover on BSE amounted to Rs 5,323.51 crore, compared with a turnover of Rs 3,615.78 crore registered during the previous trading session.
