Mumbai, Aug 16 (UNI) The benchmark index of Bombay Stock Exchange
(BSE) dropped in a volatile session on Thursday by 188.44 points to
end negative at 37,663.56 on selling in select bank shares.
The Nifty of National Stock Exchange (NSE) too fell by 50.05 points
at 11,385.05.
In a see-saw trend seen during the day, the Sensex edged down by 56
points to 37,796.01 in morning trade. It then crashed by 218 points
to hit day's low of 37,634.13 before closing at 37,663.56, tumbling
by 188.44 points as compared to its previous close. It registered
day's high at 37,891.92, up by 39 points.
The Nifty registered day's high and low at 11,449.85 and 11.366.25
points, respectively.
The sectoral indices like Materials, Energy, Bankex, Capital Goods,
Realty and Oil & Gas fell that impacted the market sentiment.
However, Health Care, IT and Utilities increased that capped its
further losses, brokers said.
The secondary barometers such as the BSE Mid-Cap index and Small-Cap
index fell 0.48 per cent and 0.20 pc, respectively. Both these
indices outperformed the Sensex.
The market breadth was negative on BSE, as 1,181 shares advanced
against 1,543 declined and 137 were unchanged.
