New Delhi, Jan 22 (UNI) Ahead of the January 24 meeting of the three member selection committee to appoint the new CBI chief, the Congress on Tuesday said that the process of appointment of the new director of the investigation agency should be transparent.
Talking to reporters here, AICC senior spokesperson Anand Sharma said,’’Prime Minister Narendra Modi is desperate to select a ‘pliant’ CBI director. However, the selection of the new CBI chief should be transparent process.’’
He said that no office against whom there was a question mark or charge should be considered for the post.
‘’No officer against whom there is a question mark or a charge should be considered for the empanelment. Otherwise there will be miscarriage of justice,’’Mr Sharma said.
The meeting of the high-powered selection committee, headed by the Prime Minister and comprising the Chief Justice of India and the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, to select the next chief of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is scheduled to be held on January 24.
The panel had, in its meeting on January 10, decided to remove the incumbent director Alok Verma.
The decision was taken with a 2-1 majority with Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge giving a dissent note while the PM and CJI’s nominee in the panel Justice AK Sikri voted in favour of removal of Mr Verma.
The committee prima facie found sufficient evidence to approve his ouster from the CBI and post him as Director General (DG), Fire Services.
Mr Kharge didn’t agree and wrote a dissent note. Verma subsequently refused to take up the new post pointing out that he has already reached the age of retirement.
That meeting of the selection panel happened after the Supreme Court reinstated Verma conditionally as the head of CBI and asked the committee to look into the Central Vigilance Commission report against him.
The reinstatement came 77 days after Verma was sent on leave on the intervening night of October 23 and 24.
