SC sets aside Kerala HC's directions ordering Vigilance probe and fee refixation against Chinmaya Mission Trust

New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) Expressing concern over the Kerala High Court’s direction for a vigilance probe against the Chinmaya Mission Trust, the Supreme Court cautioned that “fishing and roving inquiries” can seriously damage the reputation and character of individuals or institutions.
While setting aside certain directions issued by the Kerala High Court that had ordered the Cochin Devaswom Board to re-fix licence fees and initiate a vigilance inquiry against the Chinmaya Mission Educational & Cultural Trust, the Supreme Court cautioned the High Court not to go beyond the scope of the petition.
A Bench comprising Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice K.V. Viswanathan held that the High Court’s additional directions exceeded the scope of the original writ petition and were passed without affording the appellants an opportunity of hearing, thereby violating the principles of natural justice.
