SC seeks report by central agencies on BSP leader

New Delhi, Feb 8 (UNI) Supreme Court today sought a detailed status report from the central probe agencies, Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO), Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) in connection with the alleged activities of BSP's Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Mohammad Iqbal.
The apex court three-judge bench, comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) Tirath Singh Thakur, Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri and Justice R. Banumathi, was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by the petitioner, a businessman, Ranvir Singh, against the Uttar Pradesh Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) lawmaker, Iqbal.
Singh, in his PIL, claimed that the Uttar Pradesh MLC, Iqbal, is allegedly involved in money laundering and criminal cases. Iqbal vehemently denied the allegations. He, rather, on the other hand alleged that Singh has a criminal background. To this, the SC asked the UP government to inform it about the criminal antecedents of petitioner, Singh.
