SC rejecting LG’s appeal on power tussle 'a victory for democracy' : CM

Puducherry, Jul 12 (UNI) Chief Minister V Narayanasamy on Friday termed the Supreme Court rejecting the appeal filed by Lt Governor Kiran Bedi and the Union Home Ministry against the Madras High Court order with regard to administrative control over the bureaucracy, a 'victory for democracy'.

Talking to news persons here, Mr Narayansamy reacting to the Apex Court order said that this is a victory for democracy as well as a victory for the people of Puducherry.
The High Court Order earlier stated that the Lt Governor “cannot interfere” in day-to-day affairs of the UT’s elected government.

The Chief Minister thanked the judges of Top Court for dismissing the LG's appeal.

It may be noted that there was power struggle between the Lt Governor and the elected government here and Parliamentary Secretary to Chief Minister K Lakshminarayanan moved the Madras High Court seeking to prevent the intervention of the Lt Governor into the day-to-day affairs of the government.
The High Court passed the Order in favour of the elected government. Dr Bedi and the Union Home Ministry had filed an appeal in the SC and the order was given today.

Mr Narayansamy said that the counsel for Lakshminarayanan argued that Ms Bedi have no right to move the Apex Court on the issue and she should have filed the appeal in the Madras High Court if she desired.
Following this the Supreme Court rejected her appeal and directed her to approach the Madras High Court if needed, he added.
It has become clear that the elected government enjoys all powers and the Lt Governor could not intervene into the day-to-day affairs of the government, Mr Narayanasamy said.
