SC refuses to stay 5-yr sentence to former SGPC chief

SC refuses to stay 5-yr sentence to former SGPC chief
Bibi Jagir Kaur

New Delhi, Jan 17 (UNI) The Supreme Court today refused to stay the five-year jail sentence to former Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) Chief Bibi Jagir Kaur, in connection with the case of forceful abortion, wrongful confinement and abduction of her daughter. A bench of the Apex Court, headed by Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, refused to stay the five year jail sentence of Kaur. Earlier yesterday, the Punjab High Court had refused to stay her conviction, after which she had to knock the doors of the Apex Court for relief. Now after today's SC order, Kaur could not contest the Assembly polls in Punjab as conviction in this case makes her ineligible for the same. In April 2000, the Shiromani Alkali Dal (SAD) leader's daughter Harpreet Kaur, had allegedly died under mysterious circumstances. Later, an inquiry conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), on the High Court's directions, found Bibi Jagir Kaur's involvement in the case. In 2012, she was convicted on various counts - forcible abortion, wrongful confinement, abduction and criminal conspiracy - except murder. UNI XC RJ 1348
