New Delhi, Oct 22 (UNI) Not finding any merit, the Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a PIL filed by a Delhi-based lawyer, seeking lowering of males' marriageable age to 18 years.
"We dismiss the petition. The petition is devoid of any merit," a division bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi and also comprising Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, said.
While dismissing the petition filed by lawyer Asok Pande, the court also slapped a fine of Rs 25,000 on the petitioner.
After hearing about the imposition of Rs 25,000 fine on him, the 50-year-old lawyer pleaded to the SC for waiving off the same, to which CJI Gogoi told him that if a person who is 18 years of age comes to the SC with such a plea, the court would give him the cost deposited by the advocate.
Pande, in his petition, stated that a person with 18 years of age can vote and join the Indian Army, but yet cannot marry.
