SC quashes AP govt's petition, gives nod to conduct GP polls

SC quashes AP govt's petition, gives nod to conduct GP polls

Vijayawada, Jan 25 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Monday quashed the petition filed by the Andhra Pradesh government seeking postponement of Gram Panchayats (GP) elections and gave its nod to conduct the elections as per the schedule issued by the State Election Commission (SRC).
The Andhra Pradesh government suffered a setback today as the Supreme Court bench comprising Justice Sanjay Kishan Koul and Justice Hrushikesh Roy set aside its petition seeking the deferment of GP Elections. The Apex court also found fault with the government employees’ unions for openly raising objections to participate in the election process citing the Coronavirus pandemic and vaccination as reasons.
Senior advocate Mukhul Rohitgi presented arguments on behalf of AP government who cited that elections were postponed in Goa due to Covid-19 vaccination drive and urged the Apex court to put on hold the GP polls in AP. But the SC judges did not concur with his argument and directed the AP government to conduct GP polls.
