SC pushes Bengaluru civic polls to Dec 2026, extends GBA election deadline

Bengaluru/New Delhi, July 17 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Friday granted Karnataka a fresh extension to conduct the long-delayed Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) elections, directing that polls to the five newly created municipal corporations in Bengaluru be held in December 2026 after completion of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The order, passed by a bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant and comprising Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohan, marks another postponement of Bengaluru's civic elections, which have remained pending since the expiry of the erstwhile Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) council in September 2020.
The GBA had moved the apex court seeking modification of its earlier May 20 order, under which elections were to be completed by August 31, contending that the statewide voter roll revision had stretched election machinery and made simultaneous conduct of the two exercises impractical.
