SC decides to hear plea by AFT to demote officer

New Delhi, May 27(UNI):The Supreme Court today decided to hear on May 30 pleas, including one by the Centre, challenging an Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) order, demoting an officer from the rank of Lt General to Brigadier for allegedly misrepresenting facts and imposing a cost of Rs 50 lakh on the Defence Ministry and the Army.
An Apex Court two-judge vacation bench, headed by Justice Prafulla C Pant and also comprising Justice DY Chandrachud, agreed to weigh the matter on May 30 after hearing the mentioning by the Attorney General (AG) Mukul Rohatgi.
On May 13, the AFT had passed an order that Lt Gen N K Mehta from the Army Ordnance Corps, who had been elevated to the rank of Lieutenant General few months ago, be demoted to the rank of Brigadier, two rungs below the current rank, with immediate effect for misrepresenting facts before the selection board.
