SC allows Karti Chidambaram to travel abroad

SC allows Karti Chidambaram to travel abroad

New Delhi, Oct 25 (UNI) Supreme Court on Monday allowed the accused in the INX Media case and Congress MP, Karti Chidambaram to travel abroad from October 25 to November 21 on condition of depositing Rs 1 crore.
Karti is supposed to attend a tennis tournament from October 25 to November 21.
"We allow him (Karti Chidambaram) to travel abroad from October 25 to November 21. The terms and conditions remain same," a bench headed by Justice A M Khanwilkar said in its order.
Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Enforcement Directorate (ED), told the apex court that Karti is not cooperating in the probe and skipping summons issued by the investigating agency.
Congress MP, Karti Chidambaram had moved the application before the Supreme Court seeking its directions to travel abroad.
The application, filed by the accused, Karti Chidambaram, before the Apex Court, was opposed by the SG Mehta who submitted to the Supreme Court that Karti Chidambaram hasn’t co-operated in the investigation and not appropriately responded to summons issued by the ED in the INX Media case.
The Supreme Court asked the SG to file an affidavit in this regard.
"That the aspect can be dealt with in detail after affidavit is filed. For the time being, we permit the applicant (Karti Chidambaram) to travel abroad from period between 25th October to 21st November 2021 as prayed," the bench of the Apex Court said and added that the hearing on the main issue of the powers of the ED will be heard later.
Mehta said that we issued summons on June 30, 2021. He didn't appear. "He is not cooperating with the investigating agency," he said.
Senior lawyer Kapil Sibal, appearing for Karti Chidambaram, said that he has not been been served any summons since 2020. He wanted to fly on October 25. We served the application to them two months ago.
"He has not received any summons," Sibal told the Supreme Court, while answering to the argument of the SG Mehta that Karti Chidambaram is not cooperating with the ED summons and probe.
Mehta said that we had served summons on documents. He is not cooperating. He also submitted some documents to the Supreme Court to buttress his claim in the case.
To this, the Supreme Court observed that we will allow usual order. "Once he (Karti Chidambaram) comes back to India he must appear before the Investigating Officer (IO). If he fails to do so we will consider cancelling bail," the Supreme Court said.
