Sania-Strycova rally to beat Martina-Coco in doubles final

CINCINNATI, Aug 22 (UNI) Marin Cilic of Croatia robbed Andy Murray of third Cincinnati men's singles title; Ivan Dodig (Croatia)/Marcelo Melo (Brazil) prevailed over Jean-Julien Rojer (Netherlands)/Horia Tecau (Roumania); 1-5 down in first set Sania Mirza of India teaming up with Barbora Strycova of Czech Republic staged a grand rally to defeat Martina Hingis (Switzerland)/Coco Vadeweghe (US) in the Western and Southern Open (USA Open Series) today. Pitted against each other for the first time after their mutual decsion to play with new partners in the women's doubles final at the packed Grandstand, Sania Mirza teamed up with Babora Strycova of Czech Republic to beat her former doubles partner Martina Hingis of Switzerland and Coco Vanderweghe of US by 7-5, 6-4. Before splitting Mirza and Hingis had together claimed 14 titles, including the Wimbledon, US Open and Australian Open titles in 2015. This year, they had captured just one title since February. At one point, they had a 41-match winning streak. Sania Mirza had a distinguished record in Cincinnati. Sania Mirza and Bethanie Mattek-Sandsholds won the doubles title in 2007. The Indian star player has the most doubles triumphs in the history of the Cincinnati doubles event (18). Sania Mirza is the seventh woman to reach multiple Cincinnati Open finals. A sizable Indian spectators throng the Grandstand to cheer Sania Mirza and she did not appoint the spectators. Sania's father Imran Mirza also witnessed the final. During the second set, Imran Mirza came on the court and had gave some advice to Sania and Babora Strycova. Twelth seeded Cilic, who won the US Open in 2014, made his maiden appearance yesterday here in a Masters 1000 final against top seed twice Wimbledon and Rio Olympic champion Andy Murray. Winner of the Cincinnati Open singles titles in 2008 and 2011 Andy Murray was denied the third title by Cilic who played an inspired game hitting his powerful strokes on both sides. Murray has enjoyed one of the most successful periods of his Grand Slam career after winning Wimbledon for a second time and defending his Olympic gold medal in Rio. Rated as an ace machine 15th-seeded Karolina Pliskova of Czech Republic continued to fire aces to unsettle her opponents. With seven more aces today against second seeded second-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany in the women's singles final, she had completed 47 aces in the tournament. Pliskova registered straight set 6-3, 6-1 victory in 62 minutes title clash. Pliskova recorded her third victory in eight meetings against Angelique Kerber so far.
