Sajjan Kumar's acquittal rekindles 1984 memories, Riot survivor voices anguish

Chandigarh, Jan 22 (UNI) The acquittal of former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a key case linked to the 1984 anti-Sikh violence has reignited painful memories for survivors, with victims’ families expressing deep disappointment over what they describe as unfinished justice even after decades of legal battles.
Reacting to the decision, 1984 riot survivor Jagdish Kaur said the verdict had reopened old wounds for the Sikh community. She described the acquittal as deeply hurtful, stating that it felt like fresh pain being inflicted on families who have waited years for accountability.
Recalling the events of November 1984, Jagdish Kaur said she lost her husband, her young son, and three brothers during the violence. She referred to incidents in the Janakpuri–Vikaspuri area of Delhi, where brutal killings, including that of a senior Air Force officer and his son, were reported, and in which Sajjan Kumar’s name had figured during investigations. According to her, the acquittal in such a case has caused widespread shock among riot-affected families.
