SAG hockey: India, Pak win their matches; Indian eves beat Nepal

Guwahati, Feb 7 (UNI) India started their campaign in hockey in 12th South Asian Games on a winning note with both men and women teams tasting victory in their maiden outings here today. In the men section, India defeated Bangladesh 4-1. India started off on a confident note, with first goal coming from Somanna in the 10th minute. Two more goals came in quick succession for India when Gaganpreet scored in the 27th minute and Nilam in 30th minute. As the match resumed after half time, India was found playing a relaxed game, leading Bangladesh to score their lone goal of the match. Milon scored for Bangladesh in the 42nd minute, bringing some hope for the team. But India once again upped its guard and managed to gain 4-1 lead through Umar's in the last minutes of the game. Indian eves also started with a thumping victory over Nepal, winning 24-0. Host India dominated play throughout, having no difficulties in finding the goal post. For India, four goals each were scored by Barla and Yendala. Three goals were scored each by Rani, Kaur, Neha, G Kaur and Deepika. Preeti scored two goals for India. In another match in men section, Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka 3-0. Pakistan gained lead in the first half of the match when Abbas scored the first goal in the 12th minute and Shah scored the second in 19th minute. While Sri Lanka could not manage to open their account, Pakistan sealed their lead when Qadir scored the third goal in the 50th minute. UNI SG PY AJ 2250
