New Delhi, Aug 17 (UNI) Shiromani Akali Dal MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Wednesday said the remission of 11 convicts of the Bilkis Bano case should be revoked, and called their release a 'sad day for democracy'.
"It's a sad day for democracy if 11 rapists and killers walk free on I-Day. My heart goes out to gang rape victim Bilkis Bano who lives with trauma of witnessing murder of 14 family members in 2002," she said.
"Let us stand for NariS hakti in real sense of the word. Revoke this remission now," she said.
A former ally of the BJP, SAD walked out of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in 2020 on the issue of farm legislations against which farmers were protesting across the nation.
On Monday, 11 men convicted for raping Bilkis Bano during the 2002 Godhra riots, and killing her three-year-old daughter and 13 others were released by Gujarat government.
A special CBI court sentenced all accused to life imprisonment on charges of gang rape and murder of members of Bilkis Bano's family in January 2008.
The Bombay high court had later upheld their conviction.
