SAD demands appropriate relief for flood-affected farmers

Chandigarh, Aug 19 (UNI) Terming the relief announced by Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh as completely inadequate, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Monday demanded the state government to provide an appropriate compensation package, reflecting the enormity of the calamity, which had befallen on the farmers of Punjab, due to rampant flooding in several districts of the state.
In a statement here, SAD leader Daljit Singh Cheema said that around 20 villages in Ropar had suffered extensive damage with paddy crop being destroyed, even as flood water entered the villages of Khairabad, Gurdaspura, Phul Kalan, Phul Khurd, Budhabhaura, Chak Dhehra, Baterla, Madhopur, Tibba Tapprian and Ranjitpura, causing huge loss to residents.
''Flood water has entered houses, destroying furniture and weakening walls, which have developed cracks. Besides this, foodgrains stored in the houses have been destroyed,'' he said.
