Russian Tu-160 flight to Venezuela complies with nuclear arms ban in Latin America: Moscow

Moscow, Dec 14 (Sputnik) The flight of the Russian Tu-160 aircraft to Venezuela does not breach the agreement on the ban of nuclear weapons in Latin America, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Friday in a statement.
According to the Russian military, the two Russian Tu-160 strategic bombers, an An-124 military transport aircraft and an Il-62 plane, which landed in Venezuela on Monday, were conducting interoperability drills with the Venezuelan Air Force. However, the Organization of American States (OAS) has expressed its concern over the presence of Russian military aircraft "capable of using nuclear weapons" in Venezuela.
"Regarding the statement on the website of the Organization of American States (OAS) ... we would like to say the following: Russia strictly and fully complies with its commitments on the additional protocol of the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean, which sets out the legally binding guarantees that exclude Russia using or threatening to use nuclear arms in a state of the area ... The flight of the Russian strategic bombers to Venezuela does not in any way breach the provisions of the said treaty," the ministry said.
