Ruckus in Chhattisgarh House over Polavaram Project

Raipur, Mar 10 (UNI) Chhattisgarh’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party today assured the agitating principal opposition Congress members in the Assembly that the government would protect the state’s interests in the context of the Polavaram multipurpose irrigation project situated on Godavari River in the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and declared a national project.
“As per a remote sensing survey – besides 13 villages in Sukma District – about 2,272 ha of revenue land and 201 ha of forest cover are likely to be resultantly submerged,” Water Resources Minister Brajmohan Agrawal said in reply to Mr Amit Jogi who was expelled from the Congress in the recent past.
Amid pandemonium over execution of the Project despite non-resolution of the dispute, he said that the regime -- which moved the Supreme Court -- has decided to submit an amendment petition. The dispensation also dashed off a missive to the Environment, Forest and Climate Change Ministry to withhold public hearing for the purpose till disposal of the suit by the apex court.
