Rs 408.86 cr utilised to protect Dal Lake shrunk by 36.5 sq km

Srinagar, Jun 19 (UNI) An amount of Rs 408.86 crore has been utilised under three different schemes for protection and conservation of world famous Dal Lake, which has shrunk to 13.5 sq km from its original size of 50 sq km half-a-century ago.
However, little less than three-fourth of Dal Lake, located on the foot of the Zabarwan hills and bounded by the Shankaracharya hill and and Hari Parbat, has been lost during last few decades.
The Jammu and Kashmir High Court on June 2 directed the government to implement its directions on preservation of the water body till a permanent mechanism is evolved for protection and conservation of Dal Lake. There is a ray of hope for the conservation of the water body as the HC has already taken it in its own control and declared it ‘Custodian Legis’, an official said.
