Rs 14,000cr can be saved if vehicles put on ‘off mode’ at traffic signals stops: Pradhan

New Delhi, Jan 16 (UNI) Urging all to follow fuel conservation steps to make India energy efficient country, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan today said Rs 14,000-crore could be added to exchequer if all vehicles put on ‘off mode’ at red light traffic signals.
Speaking at the ‘Saksham 2017’ event, Mr Pradhan urged everyone to follow fuel conservation steps and contribute to saving of energy and fuel wherever they can. “Currently, there are over 15-crore two-wheelers and more than three-crore 3-wheelers on roads. By turning off vehicle engine at red light stops of traffic signal, about two percent of fuel can be saved which translates into Rs 14000-crore of saving for the country.”
Drawing a parallel to the PMUY which has an allocation of Rs 8000-cr to distribute LPG cylinders to five-crore BPL families across the country, the minister highlighted the importance of energy and fuel conservation for saving costs that could be used for other developmental projects.
He also said over 1.60 crore LPG connections have been given under PMUY since its launch in May 2016.
Further, he added that the draft norms on fuel efficiency for heavy duty vehicles will be released on April 1, 2017.
The BS IV fuel will be available across the country from April, 2017 and that the ministry has already planned on bringing in BS VI fuel by 2020, he said.
