Rohingya crisis has potential to destablise region: Bangladesh Foreign Secy

New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque on Friday said the huge influx of Rohinya refugees was a humanitarian issue at present but it might create security problems for the region later on. Mr Haque, who met his Indian counterpart S Jaishankar and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval yesterday, said they discussed the problem in detail in all its aspect. At a media briefing about the meeting at the Bangladesh High Commission here, he termed the violence in Rakhine state as ‘’ethnic cleansing’’ and said India and Bangladesh were of the view that Myanmar should give citizenship to Rohingyas. ’The refuges crisis has the potential to destablise the region,’’ he said, adding that it might not seem so at present. The problem has been created in Myanmar and solution has to be found within that country only, Mr Haque said. He said a joint working group has been set up by Bangladesh and Myanmar to find a solution. These people should be sent back to their country through a process and international bodies should be involved because the numbers are large, the Bangladesh foreign Secretary said. Replying to a question, he said there was a tendency to view such issues from the prism of radicalization but that Ignores the fact that it was above all a humanitarian issues involving women and children who were badly in need of support. He expressed gratitude for India’s support to help his country meet the challenge. UNI NAZ SHK 2046
