Restrictions lifted in downtown, SeK Srinagar

Restrictions lifted in downtown, SeK Srinagar

Srinagar, Jun 24 (UNI) Curfew restrictions, imposed in the Sheha-e-Khas (SeK) and downtown in Srinagar following separatist call to hold protests after Friday prayers yesterday, have been lifted. Restrictions were imposed to maintain law and order in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of seven police stations in the SeK and downtown Srinagar, where a Deputy Superintendent of Police was beaten to death by a mob on June 22 night. Both the factions of the Hurriyat Conference (HC) and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) have called for protests after Friday prayers in the Kashmir valley against the death of a 22-year-old youth and injuries to several others after security forces fired pellets to disperse demonstrators at Kakpora in Pulwama where three Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) were killed in an encounter early yesterday. However, police said that deceased youth was a stone pelter who was involved in ten incidents. Shops and business establishments are open and Eid shoppers are out after all roadblocks, put up by security forces yesterday, had been lifted. Historic Jamia Market, where no prayers could be offered in the Jamia Masjid, for the first time in the history, was open and witnessing heavy rush since early this morning. All roads leading to historic Masjid, stronghold of moderate HC chairman Mirwaiz Moulvi Omr Farooq, which were closed yesterday with barbed wires, were open for traffic today. Similarly, vehicles are plying normally on Nallahmar road which was closed with barbed wire yesterday. UNI BAS SV 0955
