New Delhi, Jan 20 (UNI) Congress taking serious exception to suicide of Dalit PhD scholar Rohith Vemula and 'culpability' of Union Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya and ABVP activists in abetting the suicide, described it as an another "fallout of the Modi government’s anti-Dalit agenda". The Opposition party pressed upon resignation of the Union Labour Minister whereas party vice-president Rahul Gandhi rushed to Hyderabad to see the victim's family. The party said in a statement here yesterday that five Dalit students in Hyderabad were expelled from their hostels and denied their stipends on the basis of mere allegations that they had beaten up an ABVP leader. The ABVP leader claimed he had to be hospitalised because of internal injuries he sustained at the hands of the students. However, according to a report by daily DNA, the medical officer’s deposition stated that the ABVP leader was operated upon for appendicitis. 'Union Minister Mr Dattatreya even wrote a letter to the HRD Ministry, calling the students of Ambedkar Students’ Association as “casteist, extremists and anti-national..,..the University Vice Chancellor did not bother to cross check the ABVP account and went ahead to order suspension of the five students, including Vemula", the Opposition party held in the note. Meanwhile, on his visit to Hyderabad to meet the grieving family of Vemula and Hyderabad University students, Mr Gandhi yesterday said every student can come to a University, irrespective of caste or religion, and has the liberty to express his or her ideas, freely. The duty of the University is to foster these ideas, but they created conditions for this young scholar’s suicide, said Mr Gandhi, who was sporting a black ribbon on his white kurta to express solidarity with protesting students. 'The Vice-Chancellor and the Union Ministers in Delhi are responsible for this young scholar’s pain that forced him to take his own life,' Mr Gandhi said. The Congress, in its note also alleged that the Modi Government, and its ideological fountainhead - the RSS, have consistently undermined the rights of the marginalised and backwards communities of India. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat calling for a review of India’s reservation policy and Union Minister VK Singh’s comment that compared Dalit children to dogs, are just two examples..,..under the Modi Government atrocities against Dalits have risen by nearly 20 per cent according to National Crime Record Bureau report 2015, the note said. 'The Modi government’s discrimination against Dalits was exposed in the Union Budget 2015-16, wherein the government imposed a cut of Rs 19,734 crore in the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan, reducing it from Rs 50,548 crore in 2014-15 to Rs 30,850 crore in 2015-16. 'Even, funds in the critical ‘Post Matric Scholarship Scheme’ for SCs/STs have been reduced by Rs 305.78 crore in 2015-16,' the Opposition party said. The Congress party stands committed to taking on the BJP and the RSS and fight their anti-Dalit mindset, it asserted, saying "we will continue our struggle to build an India where every single person, regardless of where he or she comes from, can proudly stand up and say “This is what I believe in.”.
