Reduce area under AFSPA in N-E States, says Parliamentary Panel

NEW DELHI, July 19 (UNI): Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs has recommended that with the improvement in security situation in most of the North Eastern States, the Government should consider gradually reducing the area under Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, (AFSPA), especially in Assam and Meghalaya.
The panel observed that the withdrawal of AFSPA from Tripura has been quite successful in ensuring a peaceful situation and given a hope to the other States in the region. It expressed the view that exercise of force must always be proportional to the operational requirements.
The 30-member Committee, headed by former Home Minister P Chidambaram, expressed concern over the fact that Assam has the highest rate of violent crimes, kidnappings and abductions, among all the states of India.
