Kochi, Aug 9 (UNI) A red alert of extremely heavy rainfall has been issued in seven districts of Kerala on Sunday.
Alappuzha, Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Idukki and Kasaragod districts are likely to receive 204.5 mm rains during the next 24 hours, according to a warning by meteorological centre here.
Orange alert of heavy rainfall has been issued in Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Palakkad on August 9 and in Kannur and Malappuram on August 10.
The State Disaster Management Authority has directed the State Government to take urgent steps to evacuate people living in low lying areas and open more relief camps citing the chances for landslide and floods in the next few days.
An order has already been issued banning night traffic between 1900 hrs and 0700 hrs in hilly areas in view of Red alert.
Moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied with gusty wind speed reaching 40 mph is likely at one or two places in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts of Kerala on August 9 and 10, according to meteorological centre here.
