Ramadass wants CM to amicably settle issues of fishermen

Puducherry, Feb 8(UNI) Former Lok Sabha member from Puducherry Prof M Ramadass today urged Chief Minister N Rangasamy to take immediate steps to amicably settle the issue of fishermen who are opposing the setting up of a Coast Guard office and Hovercraft port at Veerampattinam here.
In a statement issued today,Prof.Ramadass said the fisherfolk of Veerampattinam village are massively protesting against the establishment of a Coast Guard Centre and hovercraft Port in their village. The intrinsic duty of a people’s Government is to recognise and respect the sentiments, feelings and traditional rights of the people. The establishment of this centre, no doubt, is critical from the point of view of safety of coastal areas and nations’security ,but the moot question is its location –whether it should be situated in a village inhabited by the people or at a secluded solitary place. Government of Puducherry, without application of mind in this respect has earmarked 20 acres in a village without a structured consultation and discussion with the stakeholders of the village which is the root cause of the present uprising by the people.
He said Veerampattinam village is the Head of 32 fishermen villages of Puducherry where the Panchayats of all villages periodically meets and discusses their societal and occupational problems and settle them through the Panchayat justice system.
