New Delhi, Feb 16 (UNI) Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday stated that the party has fulfilled another election promise to the tribals in Chhattisgarh by returning their land.
“The Congress government has fulfilled another promise. Today, there is shine on the faces of farmers of Bastar”, the Congress president tweeted after he returned the ownership documents to farmers and tribals in the state.
The land owned by farmers and tribals were acquired for a steel factory in 2008, by Tata in Bastar District.
However, the land, a total of 1764 hectares belonging to more than 1700 families, was kept unutilised as Tata Steel group could not establish the company.
“After 11 years, they are getting back (their) land. The land was taken from landless farmers in 'Land Bank' for 'Saheb's friends'. This decision is the voice of tribal farmers. I welcome it”, Mr Gandhi tweeted.
It was one of the promises made by the Congress during the election campaign that if voted to power they would ensure that the tribal lands are returned.
Mr Gandhi held his fist public meeting in Chhattisgarh, after he had announced that the party would not have ‘any other conversation’ on the back drop of Pulwama terror attack, which claimed the lives of 40 security personal.
