New Delhi, Dec 13 (UNI) Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday slammed Congress leader Rahul Gadhi for lowering women and their dignity and said it was a “horrendous statement”.
“Horrendous statement made by Mr Rahul Gandhi. He may belong to the opposition party but when we are talking about the country I assume all in one. We are talking about women and women dignity. I could've definitely gone hammer and tongs on that matter,” Ms Sitharaman said during a news conference.
She said: “It is matter of shame that a senior leader of Congress party speaks forgetting about the dignity of women and because it also brings a very important initiative of the Government ‘Make in India’ into the picture, he uses all elements of sarcasm how it is not “Make in India but….,”
On Thursday, while speaking in an election rally in Jharkhand, the former Congress president had lashed out at the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and had said, "Narendra Modi had said 'Make in India' but nowadays wherever you look, it is 'Rape in India'.
In both the Houses of Parliament, vociferous scenes were witnessed over Mr Gandhi's remarks. Union Minister Smriti Irani said Indian women can give him a befitting reply but she was hurt when some UPA MPs tried to defend his objectionable comments.
