PwDs agitate in Meghalaya over 4 pc job reservation

Shillong, Dec 3 (UNI) The Federation of Persons with Disabilities (FPD) in Meghalaya on Tuesday took to the streets demanding the implementation of 4 per cent job reservation for persons with disabilities.
The Federation has also threatened to seek legal recourse against the Meghalaya government if it fails to implement fully the job reservation in accordance with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, at the earliest.
''We were forced to agitate in the streets after the Conrad Sangma-led government has turned a blind eye to our genuine demand for the past one year,'' FPD leader, Starwin Kharjana said.
He also flayed the Social Welfare minister Kyrmen Shylla for not keeping to his promises to fulfill their demands.
More than 100 Persons with Disabilities staged a sit-in demonstration near the State’s Additional Secretariat holding placards demanding for immediate implementation of their rights.
Apart from the 4 per cent job reservation, Kharjana said the federation also demanded to appoint one member in the Meghalaya Public Service Commission and in all the 11 District Selection Committees to look after the job appointment for Persons with Disabilities.
The 4 per cent job reservation policy for persons with disabilities includes 1 per cent each for blind or low vision, deaf, and locomotor disability and autism.
